Volunteers

Volunteers from throughout the Mt Gilead community are heavily involved. Fourteen churches and several civic organizations rotated  the responsibility for staffing the Food Pantry every Saturday morning from 8 am to 9:30 am since it began.

The Food Pantry also has a volunteer Board of Directors.

MGFP is affiliated with Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte, NC.

Our Story

MGFP Logo Design White.png

The Mt Gilead Food Pantry began distributing food in March 1996 to 85 persons at the Highland Community Center. In the early years clients received a single bag of food each week.

As the MGFP grew, our need for space increased. We moved to our current location at 101 E. Ingram Street in 2013. It now takes 10-12 volunteers each Saturday and the amount of food provided has increased to 1-3 boxes per client.

We currently have nearly 400 people on our client list, with new applicants each week. We are serving 130-150 families weekly.

Funding

Funding for the MGFP comes totally from donations. Most of the churches involved contribute periodically. FUMC has members giving thru Sunday School, worship offerings, memorials and special fund-raising events held by the member groups. All of the local civic groups donate annually. We also apply for and receive some grant funding from time to time. The sources for these include the local Truist bank, Randolph Electric, The Presbytery of Charlotte, family foundations and endowments.
