Mrs. Miller's Book Club

Mrs. Miller's Book Club was established  at Mount Gilead Elementary School in memory of Sandra Miller in September 2021.  A long time resident of Mount Gilead,  Mrs. Sandra Miller worked tirelessly to ensure that the children of Mount Gilead received the best education possible .  During her working career, she taught at West Montgomery High School and at Mt. Gilead Elementary and was an Elementary Supervisor for the Montgomery County School System. Following retirement, Sandra continued her contribution to education as a volunteer and leader in programs to help school children and by serving on the Boards of Montgomery Community College Foundation and Montgomery County Schools.

At their first meeting, club members completed an interest inventory, decorated their book mark, and set goals for their reading.  We know Mrs. Miller is smiling as we encourage a love of reading through her Book Club.

Back to School Rally

In 2016, Friends in Focus recruited area churches to partner with them for collection of school supplies, monetary donations, and assistance in the packing and distribution of backpacks for the Back to School Rally. The backpacks are given to students attending Mt. Gilead Elementary, West Middle, and West Montgomery High.

Volunteers shop for the supplies, organize them, and pack them into the approximately 150 backpacks each year.

On the day of the Back to School Rally, sponsored by Friends in Focus, a group of volunteers give out the loaded backpacks to students in our parking lot and assist in the distribution.

First United Methodist of Mt. Gilead is proud to be an active partner with Friends in Focus in this very worthy cause.
